Day 7 of the 30 Day Challenge

Perception I  by April M Rimpo, 8" X 8" fluid acrylic on paper
Before you read my thoughts, please help me with an experiment. Take a minute to think about what emotions you feel looking at this painting.

Day 7 is the beginning of the Perception series.  This is a four part series that will form a quadriptych. Indigo is the primary color focus of this series.  When I look at the full sheet I created as a preliminary background for this series (see below) I think of a cold winter day. To create the painting, I selected a segment of this larger sheet, gallery wrapped an 8" X 8" stretcher bar, then added Quinacridone Coral, Transparent Raw Sienna, Quinacridone Gold, Pthalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, and a touch of Alizarin Crimson Quidacridone. To me these colors add a spark of life to my painting.  That said, I also love how the rivulets of indigo dance across the page forming an interesting and varied texture to the composition.

About 44" X 40" paper with indigo background
So lets talk about Indigo. As I said this color makes me think of winter, but it also makes me think of water and the calming affect water has on me. Kadinsky's interpretation was deep and supernatural, as it was for Bright Blue.  However his musical tone changed to the cello.  I can definitely see the cello, since I think of slow melodious music when I think of the cello.  It too has a calming affect on me.

The meaning of the chakra associated with indigo blue is emotional and mental intelligence, intuition, and psychic.

When I thought about all of these interpretations of indigo I decided perception was the word that best encompassed these various meanings. When I am very calm, my mind is free to explore and I am more in touch with my emotions. I believe this puts me in a better state to perceive the world around me. Since I had thought about all of this before starting to paint I hope some of those thought come through to you as you look at my painting.

So now it's your turn, please let me know your initial thoughts when you saw Perception I.  If my text altered your impression, let me know that too. Thanks for participating.
