Day 8 of the 30 Day Challenge

Perception II by April M. Rimpo

Those of you who have been following me during the 30 day challenge are probably trying to determine what part of the body you are looking at.  I was hoping to keep the pose of the figure ambiguous at this point in the series so you could just enjoy the abstract characteristics of these paintings for a while. I particularly liked the quality of the background of this segment.  The left half felt a bit like a starry night so I added some colors that might be part of an aurora borealis and swirls that could be galaxies.

My husband enjoys astronomy so I get to see a lot of pictures of celestial objects: galaxies, nebula, black holes, star clusters.  It surprises me how the filter astronomers use on their images to emphasize different aspects of a celestial object cause different parts of the sky to appear as different colors.  As I worked on this painting my goal was to use color to simulate this same effect.

  1. I love that you are dissecting your total piece - very unique! You keep us guessing...
I also love the galactic quality.

    1. Thank you. Some days I wonder whether I can keep this approach going, some days are more of a struggle than others to remember that while keeping them abstract they still need to fit together in the end.

  2. I am happy to enjoy the paintings as abstracts and this one is lovely. I particularly like the mesh-like netting lines in the background.

    1. I'm glad to hear that, Rolina. I was afraid the mesh would distract but I think it has ended up having an integrating quality. I love the unexpected.

    1. Thanks, Kay. Tomorrow you get to see the over-arching composition that this series results in.
