Semi-Abstract Paintings at Touchstone Gallery in February

Semi-Abstract paintings by April M Rimpo

The February exhibit at Touchstone Gallery in Gallery A is

"At the Heart of the Matter"
February 5 - 28, 2016

Getting to the heart of the matter is what Touchstone member artists focus on as they explore photography, collage, drawing, painting, sculpture, and hand pulled prints. Whether the subject is love, color, unusual figural poses, life issues or personal content, viewers will recognize the core of each artist's work in this expansive exhibit.
Opening reception: Friday, February 5 from 6 - 8:30 PM

My contribution to the exhibit is these semi-abstract paintings inspired by music. They are fluid acrylic with collage created on watercolor paper and then mounted on 1.5" deep wood cradled panels. The top left painting included fused glass components. Because of the deep cradles they display these paintings on a table top, book self, or any flat surface.  They can also be stacked on each other for a fun display.

These start as random abstract paintings. As I add other colors images of people appeared to me and I continue to enhance the painting until they become obvious. Collage elements were added to enhance the images. I enjoy this process since the paintings evolve without a great deal of planning.

Top Left: Dancers, 6" X 6" X 1.5", $85
Top Right: Music, 6" X 6" X 1.5", $85
Bottom: Dancers II, 9" X 12" X 1.5", $250

"Lilies" 6'X6" Fluid Acrylic

Lilies by April M Rimpo
Lilies
Fluid Acrylic on Aquabord
6" X 6"
$60 unframed, plus $8 shipping

Contact April Regarding Purchase

I've been working on a fairly large painting that is pretty detailed and complex, so in between sessions working on that I decided to do this little 6"X6" floral. Aquabord is an interesting surface to paint on.  When working with fluid paints you really have to build up layers gradually on this surface, but the end result is always luminous. Since I wanted a very loosely done floral it was tricky working back into the dry surface and still keeping mostly soft edges. When done it was varnished to protect the surface.

It is currently unframed and for sale at MAA Gallery as one of my bin pieces.

"Time at the Bus Stop" fluid acrylic 12" X 12"

Time at the Bus Stop by April M Rimpo

Time at the Bus Stop portrays a family having a few moments to talk and catch up while waiting for their ride. The morning light causes wonderful highlights and long shadows that caught my eye. As I was painting the family I couldn't help but wonder where they were headed.  Are the boys on their way to school? Is this a family outing? I decided your context heavily influences how each of us perceives the scene. Perhaps they are really headed to the fields to work.

But in reality their destination doesn't matter. What inspired me to paint this family is the interactions between them. The young mother seemed to be listening closely to her youngest son, while the older boy looked on while eating some breakfast. I suspect the oldest woman may have been the grandmother who appears to be a bit lost in thought. It was catching that happy moment in time that compelled me to paint. I hope my painting makes you smile.
