There were five people who attended and to my surprise most stayed for the full three hour session. I am used to people coming buy, watching for 15 minutes, then wandering off to check out other things in the gallery, but this set of people were full of questions. I love it when that happens so I know that what I am sharing is what they want to understand.

I demonstrated four different paintings at different stages of completeness so I could show how watercolors build from one layer to the next. The gallery manager captured some of the session on video that I am sharing here.

There will be four 3-hour sessions, where artists can work on their own projects under my guidance. I will do demonstrations both to teach some skills and to help give examples the students request to assist with their paintings. Learn more at HorseSpirit Arts Gallery's Eventbrite site.

<div dir="ltr" style="font-family: "Times New Roman";" trbidi="on">Interested in April's artwork or taking one of her classes? One of my favorite
quotes about art is by Ivan Lissner, who said, "The secret of great art -
to rob the moment of its impermanence." That was my goal with Preserving
a Time. Sometimes Mother Nature puts on such a vibrant show that I must
capture it. That was the case when the sky started to turn behind the beautiful
clock tower. A gorgeous setting made better by the way the light enhanced the
clouds with beautiful lavender and coral shades that picked up the color of the
roof and shadows thrown by the trees. I amplified the sky and created a taller
tree to cast a larger shadow on the building. I will remember this forever and
hope my painting brings back wonderful memories for you of similar places painted
by nature.

Enjoy my time-lapse video of me creating this painting below.

Inspiration occurs
from something as simple as a reflection in the water. The teal hull of the
boat is what made me stop and notice this scene. We were walking through the
outskirts of a beautiful town by the shore to meet some friends when the
reflection caught my eye. I stopped in my tracks and started to take
photographs from a few different angles. I primarily wanted the capture the
sailboat and its reflection but including the surrounds provided a backdrop
essential to set the stage. When getting ready to paint the scene I decided to
add the light streaking through the clouds to add drama to the sky and provide
an interesting cross pattern where the mast and rigging intersected with the
light. Capturing the quiet spirit of the place was essential to me. I hope you
get lost in the beauty of the place.

Check out my video on this painting. We
all know the crowds that come to watch these parades, but for me the painting is
all about the musicians and local dignitaries who participate. I love the
clothing and colors showcased in these parades: purple and orange always being
prevalent. Wanting to represent the music and energy of these events without
including the crowds led me to consider how to “show” the music and help you
“hear” it in my painting, resulting in the burst of color and “confetti” shown.
Although not a conscious decision to leave out people because of the pandemic I
can’t help but wonder if that may have been in the back of my mind as a quiet

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">I grew up with a father who loved to fish. He didn't get to do it terribly often, but when he did he was the happiest I ever saw him. He either went out on a boat he owned with one of my uncles or went to a quiet spot, without the chaos shown here on this fishing pier. My mother's father was also a huge fisherman. He loved to fish on the Jersey shore, just standing on the shore in his waders. I heard so many times about his love of fishing and saw so many pictures of him that I feel like I saw him out there, but in reality I don't think I ever actually saw my grandfather at the shore. It's interesting how family stories become real images to us. His sons followed in his footsteps in their love of fishing as did one of my uncles sons, who still fish nearly daily, one still in waders in New Jersey, the other now in Florida.
trips to the beach. My first beach trips were to the beautiful white sands on
the Atlantic City Beach, way before the casinos moved there. The beaches in New
England, where I grew up, had tan sand, while those in Oregon were slightly
more rock and I found myself mesmerized by the Pacific Ocean, not paying much
attention of the color of the sand.

fun of it, although I do believe I’ve seen coral colored beaches somewhere over
the years.

I love watching birds
flock to fishing boats when they return to port. I’m sure the pelican’s
goal was a late afternoon snack, but from what I can tell the fisherman didn’t
cooperate. As soon as he pulled into the dock and tied up the boat, two pelicans
perched on the side. Their heads formed the shape of a heart and I couldn’t
help but think they had love on their minds. Capturing the glow of the boat in
the late afternoon sun emphasized by the cool lavender shaded side led me to
create this painting in an orange, violet, and green palette. Pushing the
colors of the brown pelicans to orange-brown helped them stand out against the
multi-colored water, creating a romantic mood for the painting concept.
I used one of my favorite color schemes of orange-red, green, and violet. Emphasizing the violets brought the dreamy feel to this painting that I desired.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">Two of my favorite things combine in They're Everywhere: the colors of pigeons and painting with drips and splatters to create the illusion of a rocky cliff.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">I know, so many people think pigeons are pests but I love their iridescent colors. I'm also amazed that no matter where I travel I see pigeons. I've done paintings of pigeons in Italy, Seattle, New Jersey, and now Colorado.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">They're Everywhere was particularly fun because of the way I created the background of this painting. I started by spraying water on the paper letting the water run in all directions, making rivers of water the went across and down the page, weaving a random pattern on the page. I then dropped on color, either with a brush or by using a pipette, and tipped the paper to make the colors blend randomly following the path of the water. I also added some splatters here and there that became the shadowed spots on the cliffs. After drying I continued painting to refine the cliffs, but many of the random cracks in the rocks and shadows were already established from the first wet-into-wet wash.
<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">

<span face=""verdana" , sans-serif">I've included a video of me creating this painting; a time lapse over a week of painting. Enjoy! I'd love to hear your feedback.
The chickens tend to stay in the back of the property so I seldom see them, except when they wander out onto our shared private road. I’ve been wanting to paint this barn since we moved here 23 years ago. I’ve taken dozens of photos but none showed the barn well. In March I went out for a morning walk, not my normal time, and there the barn stood in its glory with the sun shining on the roof. I finally got some long awaited photos of the barn. It was worth the wait. I hope you enjoy the painting as much as I rejoiced being able to finally share this view with others.
I chose a spring green, purple, and red/orange color scheme for this painting. came from a trip to New Orleans during the French Quarter Jazz Fest. A great
festival with 21 stages from small ones like this stage set up next to the
French Market to very large stadiums. A portable dance floor was in front of
the stage encouraging everyone to dance. The central couple appeared to be
professional dancers and their movements and energy motivated me to paint the
scene. I had fun brightening it up with color to reflect the energy I felt while watching the dancers and listening to the lively music.

flexibility and balance when preening their feathers after a morning swim. I took countless photos that day waiting to
capture one where they were all standing upright, then it dawned on me that
their crazy poses were the real story of this painting. The subtle variation in
color in their feathers went unnoticed until I started to paint them. Take some
time to really enjoy the soft pastel shades of their plumage.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Normally I paint on watercolor paper, but not so for Guatemalan Girl. Ampersand™ <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">has a product called Aquabord™<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> that has a deep cradle made from 2" birch plywood strips that are attached flush with the back edge of the pane. They make a nice presentation, so framing is not required. The medium on the board is <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">designed for use with aqueous media. I found it had some of the same properties as watercolor paper, but I did have to be careful about how long I worked on an area to keep it from getting too soft. When the painting was complete I varnished the surface so it can hang without glass.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I wanted to fragment the image so I chose 5" square aquabord and designed the piece so each segment would be an interesting painting in its own right. The exact placement of her body in each frame was carefully crafted to create interesting abstract in each panel.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I considered an exhibit where each segment could be purchased separately. If sold separately the girl would be shared among the various buyers. It would be interesting to bring the buyers together to meet and foster new relationships through my art.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The more I thought about the logistics I feared it would be very difficult to hang the segments so they remain properly aligned when hung as a whole. It seemed like aligning the segments might be a nightmare for me and the gallery, so in the end I attached the 9 panels to a sheet of Plexiglas™<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"> and drill a slotted hole in the Plexiglas <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> where it could be hung from a nail.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I still like the idea of displaying art so separate pieces form one image while the individual works are sold separately. Perhaps if I do this as a single line of paintings instead of a square of nine paintings the logistics of hanging would be reduced. Let me know what you think about this idea.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">This feature show transitioned from HorseSpirit Art Gallery's physical gallery at Historic Savage Mills to an Online Show at the link provided above. April reveals several new paintings in this show. You'll see some new themes in April's work but all with a story to share. She'd love to hear what story you see in her work as that enriches the work for all.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">In April's art she uses Color and Light to Tell Stories of Life. Some are stories that capture history, show reveal the effects of time, others are a quiet spot where you can get lost in a calm and dreamy world. She has also included some small work of clouds that return April to her childhood when she would lie in the grass with a friend and they'd tell each other what they saw in the clouds.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">These is a small series that portrays seasons of the year. Rather than just capture the iconic symbols of each season April included birds that she sees at the bird feeders her husband set up in the backyard of their home. In these paintings the birds are all placed on the same mailboxes but their setting changes in each, transporting you from garden, to lake, to farm country, and a snowing drift.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Most of the work is watercolor that has been mounted, varnished, and either framed or gallery wrapped around stretcher bars. A few of the pieces are fluid acrylics that are also painted on watercolor paper. Six of the pieces were painting on Aquabord, a trademarked clay surface available from Ampersand Supplies. These too are varnished providing a very modern display with no glazing. Two of the watercolors use traditional framing under Plexiglas and a white mat.

quiet of an old abandoned building. I always enjoy seeing places that have
started to decay and collapse. I think I find them fascinating because their
history is revealed. This building challenged me in countless ways with so many
different materials (brick, reflections on glass, rusted metal, tree brambles
and vines, water reflection, and the undergrowth of the distant woods.)
Although I loved figuring out how to portray these textures it is the story of
the place and the lone fisherman that drew me to paint it.<span face=""arial" , sans-serif" style="font-size: 13.5pt;">
