This sweet little fawn was born in the tall grass in our yard. Who knew that negligence, due to a lot of rain, would result in a perfect hiding place for the doe to deliver her fawn.  We were fortunate to have a view looking down into this spot from our living room.  My husband and I both took pictures as we watched our new neighbor.  

I believe this was its first time standing as it looked about on the world. Not long later the mother arrived to check on her fawn, who walked over to nurse. They sure get moving quickly. We were so honored to witness these early hours of the baby fawn's life.

Happiness abounds in this painting of chicks and a duckling who gaze in curiosity at the new arrival. Standing next to the abandoned shell the new chick hasn't shaken off the shell top, but is drawing a crowd that gathers to greet their new dapper friend. The duckling is so excited she can't help but dance.

In Serenity Found my goal was to create a painting that could provide a great place to relax at the end of the day.  Taking inspiration from a photograph I took mid-morning and shifting it to sunset allowed me to contrast the distant mountains with the near desert plain using complementary colors and cool versus warm colors.  I decided to make it an early sunset so the horses wouldn't be entirely backlit, allowing me to show some of their details. 

I hope you enjoy viewing this painting and that it has a healing effect on you, removing any stresses from your day.

Paintings are a wonderful way to travel back in time. I first photographed these ducks when I was at college in my late teens.  The pond was across the street from the college in a lovely Azalea Garden, where the Azaleas grew far larger than they ever grew where my family lived. I even remember it was near the beginning of the school year and I was exploring the area around campus. 

Not that I hadn't seen many ducks throughout my life, but the combination of the beauty and serenity of the garden has always made this image special for me. Naturally I felt the need to paint the scene many years later and travel back to that wonderful day wandering about the garden.

C Street Fest on September 19th in Laurel Maryland #CstSept19 #localartist

I and three other members of the Laurel Art Guild will be included in the artists participating in the C Street Fest and Block Party!  Come sharing the festivities from 11AM to 3PM on Saturday, September 19th.  We'll be outside C Street Gallery.

Bucks be Here!

Three Bucks about to Depart from our Yard

You may remember that back in June I posted about a newborn fawn who was nestled in some tall grass in our yard for the day.  If you missed that post you can read it at A Sweet Addition to Our Neighborhood. We've not seen the fawn again and suspect Mom moved her to a more remote location.

The 2 Point Buck

This week it was the bucks turn to visit. One two-pointer and two three-pointer bucks roamed about our yard nibbling on our wild berries, the stalks from our Hosta flowers, new shoots of grass, and just about anything else that looked yummy. My husband and I noted how they did not mind us being in the windows watching them.  Much more at ease than the doe normally is when she wanders through.

Since they were clearly roaming about as a group it was obvious it is not yet breeding time, so no competition just yet.

Their sizes varied with one very frail looking 3 point and one larger, healthier 3 point.  The third deer, which we think is a 2 point (although there may have been a hint of a third point) was about the same size as the larger 3 point.  There were twins born in our area a few years ago, so we believe they must be the two 3-point bucks.

A Sweet Addition to our Neighborhood

 Last Sunday, when my husband started to mow the lawn he came across this beautiful fawn nestled in some of our new grass.  We believe the doe had given birth Saturday night; she must have thought the long grass was a meadow.

Needless to say the mowing stopped so this lovely visitor wouldn't be disturbed too greatly. I setup a chair near the window that overlooked the fawn and kept an eye out for the doe and any action from the fawn.

 

Late afternoon the doe walked between our raspberry bushes and the woods and the fawn stood up allowing me to take the photo at left.

I suspect the doe saw me in the window so she stayed in the woods.  The fawn took another nap and I continued to read and periodically look out the window waiting.

When it was nearly dusk the doe came out of our woods, strolled around the whole house, then approached the fawn. Part of our driveway runs along the side of the house into the backyard; the doe and her fawn reunited on the driveway, which was a little easier for the fawn to stand on.  I loved how they touched noses when they met.

Immediately the fawn ran on her very wobbly legs to nurse while the doe stood guard.  Her head kept swiveling from front to back making sure no one approached. My husband and I had a perfect view from our living room window and snapped many photographs.

 
It took quite a while for the doe to convince the fawn to follow her back into the woods.  I suspect they are nesting under the raspberry bush, but decided not to disturb them just yet and resisted the urge to go look.

This is the first fawn we've seen in our yard in two years. I hope we get to see them again. However based on our experience two years ago, the does will likely move the fawn as soon as it gets more stable on its legs.

This little fawn just may have to find her way into one of my paintings like Deer with Fawn that I painted earlier this Spring.

Much of yesterday's snow has melted and the streets are clear. All the birds and animals are out and about. I'm sure nests are being built, spring cleaning of sorts for our feathered friends. The more timid animal life is peeking out and checking the air with ever twitching noses.  This little bunny, partially under the cover of the woods, hasn't quite decided whether to venture further or not.

6:45 PM EDT today is the Vernal Equinox when it becomes officially Spring. It actually felt like Spring a few days ago. The warm temperatures had a few people out with no jacket and I even saw a few of the more rugged sort wearing shorts. I chose the light sweater, which I found unnecessary as the day progressed.  All was well.  It seemed light the birds in our yard were chirping a happy song, the leaf buds on the trees seemed just a tiny bit larger. A pair of hawks that live in our trees appeared to be beginning the nesting process.  I even saw a vulture (not my favorite bird nor a lovely image of Spring) doing a fancy dance with his wings held out for another vulture trying very hard to attract her attention.   I thought at last, Spring is here.  It seemed like doing this little painting of a deer with her fawn was perfect to celebrate. Fawns are normally born in Maryland toward the end of Spring in May or June, but for me the fawns are one of the symbols of Spring.

So despite the fact that the weather decided to give us one more winter day, starting us out with more snow, I am still going to celebrate Spring. Although we do have about 1" of snow coating the trees it is beginning to turn to rain and I am still hopeful that by 6:45 PM EDT they trees will again be bare.

Although our only resident animal is a dear kitty, Dusty, we live in an area were small and large animals abound.  The domesticated farm animals include: lambs, goats, chickens, Guinea hen, cattle, and horse. Our wild animal visitors include: brown fox, raccoons, deer, ground hogs, and an occasional opossum. So when I want to paint an animal it is like one will either wander by our home or I can just walk to a neighbors to get some photographs.  These cute lambs live about a mile from our home.

When I did my Spring by the River painting I intentionally had an extra 6 inches of paper on one end, so as I painted some nice unplanned tints and textures formed on in this margin.  I particularly liked this piece that had pale pinks and grays and decided it would make a nice backdrop for the lambs. 

This small 4" X 4" painting on watercolor paper was mounted on a 2" deep cradled, wood panel becoming one of my "stackable" pieces perfect for Easter, a child's bedroom, a play area, or any little nook or cranny that needs a spot of color.  I varnished the paper after painting to provide UV protection form the sun and to protect that paper from the elements.

The weather here in Maryland has been colder than normal this Winter. I think that has caused me to wish for an early Spring. In the last week I've interspersed these small paintings between working on a couple of larger pieces. They make me feel better, until I step outside.  In fact I just came in from 1.5 hours of shoveling snow, so finishing up this blog post seemed urgent to get me back thinking Spring.
