"Parade Play" watercolor by April M Rimpo

Parade Play by April M Rimpo

Parade Play
Watercolor
27" X 28" painting
42" x 42" mat and frame

Parades and New Orleans come hand-in-hand. We all know the crowds that come to watch these parades, but for me the painting is all about the musicians and local dignitaries who participate. I love the clothing and colors showcased in these parades: purple and orange always being prevalent. Wanting to represent the music and energy of these events without including the crowds led me to consider how to “show” the music and help you “hear” it in my painting, resulting in the burst of color and “confetti” shown. Although not a conscious decision to leave out people because of the pandemic I can’t help but wonder if that may have been in the back of my mind as a quiet undertone.

Knowing there were 466 images submitted for this exhibition, I am honored that Parade Play was selected by juror Anne Abgott for the Baltimore Watercolor Society's 2021 Mid-Atlantic Exhibition to be presented from June 12 - August 31.

Collaboration with Musicians - Part III Bob Jacobson

Connecting © April M Rimpo

As part of my and Elaine Weiner-Reed's exhibit, Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling, we put out a call for musicians and writers to collaborate with us as part of our exhibit. We provided those who responded a series of images of our paintings. They then selected which ones they would write music or poetry to.

Bob Jacobson remembers his first time improvising, at age fifteen, to the folk tune "Billy Boy." He's been playing improvised solos to jazz, R&B, rock, blues, and Latin tunes ever since. This was his first experience creating melodies and improvisations inspired by artwork, almost totally from scratch.

Visiting New Orleans in May of 2018, which included playing on the streets of the French Quarter with two bands of seasoned local musicians, aided him in responding to the Preservation Hall piece, Showing Off II.
Showing Off II © April M Rimpo

Below is a link to a video I created from raw video photographed by my husband, Chas.

I'm so thankful for this experience, which would have never happened if Elaine Weiner-Reed had not started her initiative "Every Painting is a Song."

Follow this link to see the video of Bob's performances to Connecting, which he played on the Saxophone, and Showing Off II, which he played on the clarinet.

Wonderful Collaborations with Poets and Musicians

As part of our exhibition, Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling, Elaine Weiner-Reed and I expanded on her "Every Painting is a Song" concept and held collaboration events with musicians and poets.

Many of the poets commented about how the colors in our work were so much more vibrant than the images Elaine Weiner-Reed and I shared with them and that they really came to life in person. They were in awe of our work and several said they were planning or interested in writing pieces to more of the paintings.

One asked how we had selected which paintings to share with the writers in preparation for the event and my response was that we attempted to select paintings where we thought the story would be most appealing. His response was that they all were wonderful stories and all of them would have been great options.

This was a wonderful thing to hear since my goal in all my paintings is to share a story that I've seen and to hope others see stories of their own in my paintings. My favorite experience is when someone shares their memories that they felt when view my work.

Well this week I not only got to experience stories through poetry, but also to hear my work through musical improvisation and song. I will never forget this experience. Two of my paintings had two poems and a structured musical improvisation written to them. So many different perspectives on the story behind my art nearly brought me to tears.

I was especially taken back by the story encapsulated in a beautiful poem by Will Becker, where he envisioned the thoughts and memories of a young cellist who was busking as she played her instrument in a walkway tunnel.

Follow that with learning what Natalie Spehar, the cellist from ROGUE COLLECTIVE (our featured musicians), had to say about this painting. She related to the image in a personal way, explaining how when practicing a piece she thinks about the parts played by other musicians. She could imagine the woman in the painting doing the same. The ROGUE COLLECTIVE performance started with Natalie performing a solo, the two violinists (Alexa Cantalupo and Kaitlin Moreno) acted as people in a crowd listening quietly and periodically dropping coins in a can. They then began to play their violins, simulating the thoughts of the cellist imagining the other parts of the orchestra.  What a powerful piece of music. The audience at our event was mesmerized by ROGUE COLLECTIVE; no whispering, not a sound as they were fully engaged.

In Her Own World by April M Rimpo
The atmosphere the cellist created in the tunnel in Central Park was amazing and made me wonder about her story and what she was thinking. As a result this painting, In Her Own World, was born. Now through the poems and the insights of musicians some of my wondering has been filled. When I paint images like this I can only imagine the story and often I can only wonder at the possibilities.

I'll be creating short videos for those poets and musicians who gave us permission to share their wonderful new creations. My goal is to have these done over the next couple weeks and I'll share them as they are completed.

"Leading the Way" 34" X 24" watercolor

Leading the Way

Watercolor
Finished with Archival UV Protection Varnish
Framed with no Glass

34" X 24"

On exhibit at Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House May 9 - June 8, 2019

Leading the Way features Cyril Neville of the famed Neville Brothers. I was lucky enough to see him as a Special Guest at Voodoo Threauxdown during a set with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.  This close up of Cyril shows how this experienced virtuoso naturally took over the stage and effortlessly lead the other musicians through the songs. As he sang he pointed at other musicians to indicate it was their turn for a solo. What a joy to watch this master at work!

The energy he brought to the stage had the crowd up on their feet singing and dancing with the performance.

"Heating Up" 24"X24" Fluid Acrylic

Heating Up by April M Rimpo
Heating Up
Fluid Acrylic, Gallery Wrapped and Varnished
24" X 24"

On exhibit at Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House May 9 - June 8, 2019
Available on my website for purchase

Can you hear the saxophones? Base Sax, Alto Sax, and Guitar from Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue brought the audience to their feet numerous time during their performance in 2018 during Voodoo Threauxdown at Baltimore's Pier Six Pavillion. The colors in Heating Up are vibrating with energy, just like the musicians. They may be frozen in time in my painting, but they were moving all over the stage and rocking side-to-side. I love how paintings can bring back memories; I feel like I can hear them now. I hope this reminds you of some time when you saw a great show that just keeps coming back to visit through your memories.

"Letting Loose" 20" X 32" Watercolor

Letting Loose a watercolor by April M Rimpo
Letting Loose
Watercolor
20" X 32" painting
Mounted, Varnished, and Framed

The enthusiasm of musicians during a concert, giving their all to the audience, is the subject of Letting Loose. Not only their enthusiasm but also their joy in delivering their best is revealed in their expressions. The lighting of the stage made them appear like they were emerging from darkness, partially obscuring the equipment behind them on stage.

I preserved a few reflections off microphones, drum sets, and other equipment by using a thin mixture of gesso and liquid acrylic medium. These partially masked areas allowed me to complete the background using quick gestural brushwork and highly saturated watercolor paint. Working fast was essential to achieving vibrant colors, imitating the multicolored lights moving about the stage. My energy in applying  paint reminded me of the musicians’ movements during their performances.

Inspiration to Exhibit

Some of my paintings that will be in my and Elaine Weiner-Reed's exhibit, "Portraits of Life - The Art of Storytelling," were inspired by a concert that my husband - Chas- and I attended last year.  This post starts with some photographs I took during the concert that lead to many of my musician paintings.  After the video I show several of the resulting paintings.

The concert was Voodoo Threauxdown featuring Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Galactic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, New Breed Brass Band, Cyril Neville, Walter Washington and Kermit Ruffins.

There are paintings of people in different endeavors and other musicians in the exhibit, but I'll save those for another post.

This is not your standard exhibit. In addition to a reception with a Gallery Talk by both of us, we're also holding two collaboration events with poets and musicians.  They have written work inspired by our paintings that will be read or performed during our Collaboration Events on May 21 and 22, from 6-8pm.  The poets will read on May 21st and Bob Jacobson will perform some improvisations on saxophone or clarinet in response to our paintings.  May 22nd will feature Rogue Collective a group of  violinists and a cellist who bridge the gap between classical and popular music.  They will perform structured improvisations to our paintings. See the full list of performers here.  I hope you can come enjoy our art and these events.

"Rockin' R&B" 24" X 12" watercolor

Rockin' R&B by April M Rimpo
Rockin' R&B
Watercolor, mounted and varnished
24" X 12"

A friend of mine mentioned to me that her son was a musician in the Minneapolis area. She occasionally shares Facebook posts when he has live streaming shows or videos.  I loved his music and his whole persona.  He has been great to get to know via his videos. His name is Alex Rossi and you might want to check him out.

Once I'm inspired by musicians' work it is hard to get them out of my head and I end up doing a painting of them as my tribute to their craft. Rockin' R&B is my tribute to Alex.  I had a print of the painting created for him as a means of thanks. When I gave the print to his Mom to deliver for me she told me how much she loved the painting and how much it touched her.  I was so thrilled since she is a fantastic artist and I feared it would not hold up in her eyes.  I can't described how much joy this painting has brought to me just in seeing her reaction. Thank you my friend.

Some people have expressed their interest in my painting process. I will say it varies depending on the subject matter, but for the musician series I tend to start by working on the background and then moving to the musicians.  I know a lot of artists who always start with the face when painting people because they feel that is where they will struggle the most.  I generally don't do that because I feel like capturing the emotion of the performance is most important and later I move to the details.  Here is a series of images of Rockin' R&B in progress with the finished painting at top, where I finally developed his face.

18" X 12"

My husband and I attempt to visit New York City about once a year. We often take a walk through Central Park at some point during the trip. Sometimes our walk is just to enjoy a beautiful day in NYC and other times it's the shortest route to our destination.

Last year it was chilly in New York when we were there in the Spring, so we walked quickly through the park to get to the closest Metro stop that would be a good route back to our hotel. As we approached one of the tunnels on our path I noticed this young woman sitting just inside the tunnel playing her cello. Her music was lovely. I took photographs of her as we approached and after we passed her.

I couldn't help but wonder about her music background. For me she represented so many great musicians working hard to succeed. But maybe instead it was just a sunny Spring day and she was sharing her musical art with the world.

"Fluid" 12" X 20" watercolor

Fluid, a watercolor by April M Rimpo
Fluid
Watercolor
12" X 20" Varnished with UL Protection Varnish and Framed

As part of my upcoming exhibit in May 2019 with Elaine Weiner-Reed we invited musicians, poets, and storytellers to join us in a collaboration of creatives. In preparation we reached out to various writing groups to solicit people to join us. Their written word will be displayed with the painting that inspired it.

Last night I attending Wilde Readings at the Columbia Art Center to meet writers, hear their readings, and hope that just a few may join us with a piece of their own and read it at our event on May 21 (6-8pm) at Bernice Kish Gallery in Slayton House in Columbia, Maryland.

At the event I learned that poetry about or inspired by a work of art is called Ekphrastic Poetry. This was actually mentioned by one of their guest writers, Lisa Vihos, before she knew I was there to speak about just that. Ms Vihos mentioned that everyone has a poet inside them. Earlier that day I had commented that I wouldn't be including any poetry in our event since I didn't think it was in me.  As a result of Lisa's comment I tried my hand and the following are my thoughts on my painting. Likely not the best poem, but what was in me. Thanks for the inspiration, Lisa Vihos, for telling me to try.

Fluid
The grace of these dancers is enthralling
Their fluid movements remind me of birds soaring on high
Some pass their skills to young birds ready to stretch their wings
just beginning to learn how to fly
Like mother birds who nurture their young
to help them reach their dreams

Those interested in participating in our Collaboration Event contacted us at ewr.amr.collaborations@gmail.com and we provide images of some of our artwork.

I found an article about writing ekphrastic poetry online. It recommends that a group of poets write together. If you are in a poetry group that would like to do just that, feel free and we'll figure out how to present a variety of writings on the same painting. Here's a link to the article, 5 Tips for Writing Ekphrastic Poetry.

"Connecting" 36" X 20" watercolor

Connecting by April M. Rimpo

Watercolor
36" (h) X 20" (w)

Continuing with my series Masterful Musicians, Connecting represents my awe of this master Blues, R&B, and Jazz performer, Vanessa Collier. Multi-talented, Vanessa writes much of her music, has a voice to die for, performs incredible solos on the sax while roaming among the audience, and shares soulful pieces on the guitar. She gathers a number of young talented musicians around her delivering a show that connects so well with the audience you will never forget her. Some songs grab onto you and you find yourself humming them for days after watching this masterful woman share her love of music and energy in every performance.  Play your heart out, Vanessa Collier.

Check out this painting during my two-person exhibit with Elaine Weiner-Reed, Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling. Elaine is equally mesmerized with Vanessa Collier's music and will also have some paintings that celebrate Vanessa's music.

Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling

Rimpo and Weiner-Reed are passionate about their paintings telling stories about life. Although they work in other subject matter, portraits are their favorite subject for telling stories. Their art explores the depths of the world around them: portraying cultures and people, honoring history and traditions, depicting the emotional content of an encounter, and revealing the undercurrents of human interaction.

  • Reception and Artist Talk: Saturday, May 18 (3-5pm)
  • Collaboration with musicians and writers: Tuesday, May 21 (6-8pm)
    • BOB JACOBSON (Saxophone, Clarinet)
    • ANN BRACKEN (Poet, Author, Creator of Possibilities)
    • Full lineup can be seen at our event page

Jammin' 12" X 12" watercolor

Jammin' by Aprl M Rimpo
Jammin'

Watercolor
12" X 12"

Jazz music has been one of my favorite genres of music for quite some time, but perhaps my love of this music grew just a bit more after a visit to New Orleans during Jazz Fest. The energy at this 5 day event was contagious and we roamed around between the 21 different stages and performance venues to take in as much as we could.

Last summer the "Voodoo Threauxdown" tour come to Baltimore and my husband and I bought tickets immediately. We knew some but not all the groups who performed that night. The energy again was high. The various performers gave their all and we took it all in, loving every moment.

This concert has resulted in quite a few paintings by me, with even more planned. I'm saving most of these paintings for a first reveal at my exhibit "Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling" that will feature artwork by me and Elaine Weiner-Reed. This will be one of my paintings.

Jammin' features the saxophonist and trumpet player from Galactic.

There's nothing like a 4-day concert to get my juices flowing. Not only for the fantastic music but also for the emotion of the concert, the place, the musicians, and the people who attend.  As a visual artist I want to share it all, which I do through my paintings. This was my first experience enjoying Zydeco music; it was so much fun.

"Percussions: A Serious Business" 20" X 24" painting by April M Rimpo

Percussion: A Serious Business by April M Rimpo

Percussion: A Serious Business
Watercolor

20" X 24" painting
Approx 27" X 31" Brushed Silver Frame with White Mat

The parade for the French Quarter Jazz Fest in New Orleans was full of musicians from young school bands likely in one of their first parades to sage professionals like the members of the Society Brass Band.  This percussion crew has no doubt marched in thousands of parades, yet their level of concentration looked intense. Not a smile to be found. Given the excitement of the crowds and the joyous prancing of others in the parade, the contrast of these men made me grin, which is all it takes to make me want to share the story a painting.

Exhibited in the Southern Watercolor Society's

Society Annual Juried Exhibition
ArtCenter Manatee, Bradenton, FL

where it received an Award
