Wonderful Collaborations with Poets and Musicians

As part of our exhibition, Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling, Elaine Weiner-Reed and I expanded on her "Every Painting is a Song" concept and held collaboration events with musicians and poets.

Many of the poets commented about how the colors in our work were so much more vibrant than the images Elaine Weiner-Reed and I shared with them and that they really came to life in person. They were in awe of our work and several said they were planning or interested in writing pieces to more of the paintings.

One asked how we had selected which paintings to share with the writers in preparation for the event and my response was that we attempted to select paintings where we thought the story would be most appealing. His response was that they all were wonderful stories and all of them would have been great options.

This was a wonderful thing to hear since my goal in all my paintings is to share a story that I've seen and to hope others see stories of their own in my paintings. My favorite experience is when someone shares their memories that they felt when view my work.

Well this week I not only got to experience stories through poetry, but also to hear my work through musical improvisation and song. I will never forget this experience. Two of my paintings had two poems and a structured musical improvisation written to them. So many different perspectives on the story behind my art nearly brought me to tears.

I was especially taken back by the story encapsulated in a beautiful poem by Will Becker, where he envisioned the thoughts and memories of a young cellist who was busking as she played her instrument in a walkway tunnel.

Follow that with learning what Natalie Spehar, the cellist from ROGUE COLLECTIVE (our featured musicians), had to say about this painting. She related to the image in a personal way, explaining how when practicing a piece she thinks about the parts played by other musicians. She could imagine the woman in the painting doing the same. The ROGUE COLLECTIVE performance started with Natalie performing a solo, the two violinists (Alexa Cantalupo and Kaitlin Moreno) acted as people in a crowd listening quietly and periodically dropping coins in a can. They then began to play their violins, simulating the thoughts of the cellist imagining the other parts of the orchestra.  What a powerful piece of music. The audience at our event was mesmerized by ROGUE COLLECTIVE; no whispering, not a sound as they were fully engaged.

In Her Own World by April M Rimpo
The atmosphere the cellist created in the tunnel in Central Park was amazing and made me wonder about her story and what she was thinking. As a result this painting, In Her Own World, was born. Now through the poems and the insights of musicians some of my wondering has been filled. When I paint images like this I can only imagine the story and often I can only wonder at the possibilities.

I'll be creating short videos for those poets and musicians who gave us permission to share their wonderful new creations. My goal is to have these done over the next couple weeks and I'll share them as they are completed.

"Don't Look Back" 8" X 10" Acrylic on Canvas

Don't Look Back by April M Rimpo
I think with this painting I have now painted bicycles sitting at the side of the road, people just out for a ride, commuting to work, in triathlons, and now with Don't Look Back a cycling team on an indoor course.  Perhaps the only cycling activity I have missed is people on mountain bikes.

People often ask if I am a cyclist. I wish I could answer "yes". I haven't ridden regularly since my early 30s when I was trying to get back in shape after the birth of my son.  I am a very clumsy person so the flat terrain around our home in Arizona was perfect for me. During the middle of the morning, before the temperatures rose to their peak, I'd go out to ride. Commuters were off to work and the side streets around our home were fairly empty. There were even wide off-road paths where the clay was baked hard allowing me to travel much like on pavement. I'd often see Roadrunners and occasionally wild animals. We lived near an Indian Reservation that I passed on my ride allowing me to occasionally view a coyote in the distance. It was a lovely time.

For twenty years we've lived in a small East Coast town with narrow winding roads and lots of hills and dales. I haven't ventured out on my bicycle since right after we moved here. I found the constant cars passing me on those narrow roads much too intimidating, knowing how unstable I feel on a bicycle in the first place. My bike sits in the basement awaiting me with the bike helmet poised nearby, tires flat from neglect. But I love to watch cyclists and feel their energy as they fly by, exciting me to paint them and live vicariously through them.

There's nothing like a 4-day concert to get my juices flowing. Not only for the fantastic music but also for the emotion of the concert, the place, the musicians, and the people who attend.  As a visual artist I want to share it all, which I do through my paintings. This was my first experience enjoying Zydeco music; it was so much fun.

Enjoy more of my artwork celebrating those days:

By the Sea

I can't think of the phrase, "By the Sea," without this tune flashing through my mind.

"By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea!
You and me, you and me, oh how happy we'll be!"
Excerpt from "By the Beautiful Sea" from the musical "For Me and My Gal"
(Harold Atleridge / Harry Carrol) (1914)

I find paintings can work the same way. During the creation of a painting I feel like I am transported back to the place that inspired it. It always makes me smile when someone sees one of my paintings and tells me about a memory they feel when they see it.  It is the greatest thing that someone can tell me.

So I've decided not to share my story about the paintings in this blog post and ask that you share yours with me. Please leave a comment.

"Traffic Jam at the Concert" 24"x18" Acrylic

Traffic Jam at the Concert by April M Rimpo

Traffic Jam at the Concert
Acrylic
24" X 18"
$1700

Traffic jams occur everywhere, on streets, in narrow canals, in bicycle paths, and in stadiums. This painting shares a moment as the crowds arrive for a concert, full of excitement and anticipation just to be held up in a jam waiting for tickets to be taken.  As they break out of the jam they disperse as quickly as possible like being shot out of a tube. They return to their state of excitement and anticipation.

Feature Exhibit at HorseSpirit Arts Gallery

After a little over a year with HorseSpirit Arts Gallery, I am delighted to be featured in the gallery, from May 6 through May 27, 2018, along with Alice St. Germain-Gray.

Alice St. Germain-Gray’s creative expressions merge both art & science to produce delicate and evocative pieces born of fire and glass. Her art has been featured in numerous publications, and she is a sought after contributor in workshops and conferences with national and international artists.

I share stories of places I've visited through my paintings. Some pieces are an amalgamation of various places, bringing the essence of each together to create an emotional expression, rather than a representation of just one.  It is important to me to use color to express my feelings about a place, so
my color palette varies with my emotions. Here are a few of the 24 paintings you will see at HorseSpirit Arts Gallery during May. HorseSpirit is located at 8090 Main Street, Ellicott City, Maryland.

"Follow Your Dreams" 16" X 7" Fluid Acrylic

“New Orleans is the only place I know of where you ask a little kid what he wants to be and instead of saying, I want to be a policeman, or I want to be a fireman, he says, I want to be a musician.” – Alan Jaffe, Jazz Musician and Founder of Preservation Hall

I think the quote from Alan Jaffe says it all about this painting.  This young man was high school age, playing in the streets of New Orleans during the French Quarter Jazz Fest.

We saw street musicians from barely ten years old up to very accomplished masters, who added to the "official" music of Jazz Fest. The area in Jackson Square, just outside one of the official stadiums of the Fest, seemed like a favorite spot. Three kids, ranging from 10 - early teens sat down next to us one day, placed their plastic buckets upside down in front of them, and drummed away for the public.  They were really good.  I didn't photograph them, but will never forget them.

"The Bakery" 24" X 24" Fluid Acrylic

The Bakery by April M Rimpo
The Bakery was the result of a trip to the Hudson River Valley. My husband and I wandered around though the towns of the valley for several days enjoying the sights, food and wine.  While there we had to stop at the Culinary Institute of America have lunch in one of their restaurants and wander around outside on a lovely fall day. We also stopped in their cafe which had this bakery that served wonderful snacks and coffees.  I was drawn to all the activity in the bakery and found I could take some nice reference photos through their bakery window. When working on such a busy scene you really have to pick and chose what you want to include to get a feel for the busy atmosphere but not have a painting that is so overwhelming that you don't know where to look.

I liked weaving lavender colors through the bakery to offset all the warm colors of the breads and wooden shelves. I think they also provided a nice way to include a sense of depth to the scene.

Generally I start most of my paintings working the full sheet as a unit and maybe toward the end I work final details one section at a time. However on some paintings I feel I need to work section by section from the start nearly to completion before moving on.  The Bakery was one of these paintings.  Perhaps because there was so much detail of the figures, bread, shiny reflective appliances in the bakery that I felt I have to pay attention to details nearly from the start.

When I work this way, I really have to pay attention to keeping a consistent feel throughout the painting and work so there are still restful areas that don't detract for the whole of the painting.  The images of some of the earlier steps of the painting are shown in earlier blog post to give you a sense of how it developed. I provided links to these other posts below.

At the end I needed to work around the whole painting to either subdue or enhance areas to make The Bakery hold together as one.

"Free Living" 20"X16" Fluid Acrylic

“A part of New Orleans’ beauty is that she is a place where many people, stifled elsewhere, feel safe to be themselves:
 just safe to be."

Quo Vadis Gex Breaux, New Orleans What Can’t Be Lost, 2010
Free Living by April M Rimpo
Free Living
Fluid Acrylic
20" X 16" with brushed silver frame

Free Living is a bit of the parade held in the French Quarter for the opening of Jazz Fest 2017. I've always been intrigued by pointillist paintings from the time of the Impressionists, although I never expected to create one.  Painting thousands of dots didn't seem like something I'd ever want to do.

Well I didn't paint thousands of dots but I did use masking liquid to create all these dots.  My process was to mask some dots before painting, do a light wash, mask some more dots, paint some more, mask some more, paint a bunch of darks to see where I stood, remove the masking, then paint many more layers to push the other people in the parade into the background while painting my focal point woman to completion.

I love the final look and now appreciate even more what the pointillists did. I still can't imagine painting an entire painting with dots, but can say they were really onto an amazing something. The energy in this painting is really captivating for me and I hope for you too.

"The Bakery" Work in Progress #3

The shelves are filling up and a third person
arrives in "The Bakery"
More details of "The Bakery" by April M Rimpo
Seven days into The Bakery and the details seem to be coming faster and faster. I find when I am working on areas like the shelves on the left side of the room that getting the nuances of the shapes is mesmerizing. I guess the left side of my brain kicks in and I don't even think about what the items are until I'm nearly done then suddenly the actual items become obvious.

Boxes for take out orders. Coffee/espresso machines, cuts, plates. In the second image you can see reflections of the bread in the metal sides of the bakery equipment.

I'm anxious to finish up the painting and do the final reveal.

"The Bakery" Work in Progress #2

Three days of work on The Bakery
by April M Rimpo
The image at right shows my progress at the end of the third painting session. You can see one finished loaf of bread in the bakery, in the lower left of the painting. I can assure you that these bakers have been busy and much more bread is yet to come.

The woman is essentially complete but the male baker is far from finished. The frame of the storefront window is starting to come to life, but there are many details left.

I like the warmth of the painting, but do believe I'll want to pull some of the cool violet in the back of the store toward the front to keep the painting from getting too monotonous.

You might wonder what the rectangle in from of the man is. That is the beginning of some glare on the window pane.  I'm not sure I like the location of the glare and  I may eliminate it as I progress on the painting.

"The Bakery" work in progress-Day1

When I paint I nearly always photograph my progress after each painting session. Depending on what else I am doing each day I may paint one or two sessions in a day. I find looking at the images on my computer allows me to separate myself and be more objective in my review of what I have done and what I might need to do next.

This blog post is the beginning of The Bakery. Nothing shown here is complete but I wanted to start with the distant wall since it will be the cool foil to what will eventually be a very warm painting. This image is so early in the painting process that determining any redirection isn't really needed at this stage.

I hope you enjoy my travel to the final painting as I share my progress in a series of blog posts. I won't post every step, but several so you get a feel for how a painting develops.
