Featured Art - "Freight Yard"

This month's featured art on display at RE/MAX Advantage Realty is Freight Yard.  When I first visited RE/MAX to see the space and decide whether to exhibit there I was inspired by the industrial feel of the building with brick walls, tall ceilings, exposed ductwork and I-beams. I immediately knew that my industrial themed paintings would be perfect in this setting.  Freight Yard immediately came to mind and definitely had to shown here.

I learned this week that this painting has also been selected for inclusion in North Light's Best of Acrylics book, AcrylicWorks4: Captivating Color, so I thought this was the perfect painting to highlight from the RE/MAX exhibit.

Flight 16" X 24" Fluid Acrylic

Flight by April M Rimpo
Flight
Fluid Acrylic
16" X 24"

Having completed several urban scene paintings recently I was in need of a looser, more interpretive painting. Flight is the result. I did start with some of my reference photos, but they served as a jumping off point. They provided the overall flow of the image, but I chose one of my favorite color schemes for the painting, not worrying about the reference colors.  I also wanted a good value plan, providing and interesting pattern of lights and darks. Below is an image of the painting in black and white, letting you see the values more easily.

Using black & white images to check your values
Although I started with a value plan I take photographs of my art each day as I work on a painting. To check the values I open the photo in Photoshop® and use "Desaturate" to turn the image into black and white (as shown at left). This way I can make sure I am achieving the light and dark values that I desire.

The darks and lights help move your eye through the painting and add a great deal of energy to the finished piece.

Featured Art - Looking Up

Looking Up, a 36" X 40" fluid acrylic by April M Rimpo
Here is a change of pace for my series of Featured Artwork on display at RE/MAX Advantage Realty. Looking up celebrates a beautiful day in Autumn after the leaves have changed their color by before they fall. This painting is a great way to bring a bit of the outdoors into your home.

I enjoyed this painting while it was hanging in my living room over the fireplace. It looked great on the brick wall and really let me relax and be taking away, up through the trees to sore wherever my imagination took me.

If you need a breath of fresh air in your home, perhaps Looking Up is just what you need.
