Wonderful Collaborations with Poets and Musicians

As part of our exhibition, Portraits of Life: The Art of Storytelling, Elaine Weiner-Reed and I expanded on her "Every Painting is a Song" concept and held collaboration events with musicians and poets.

Many of the poets commented about how the colors in our work were so much more vibrant than the images Elaine Weiner-Reed and I shared with them and that they really came to life in person. They were in awe of our work and several said they were planning or interested in writing pieces to more of the paintings.

One asked how we had selected which paintings to share with the writers in preparation for the event and my response was that we attempted to select paintings where we thought the story would be most appealing. His response was that they all were wonderful stories and all of them would have been great options.

This was a wonderful thing to hear since my goal in all my paintings is to share a story that I've seen and to hope others see stories of their own in my paintings. My favorite experience is when someone shares their memories that they felt when view my work.

Well this week I not only got to experience stories through poetry, but also to hear my work through musical improvisation and song. I will never forget this experience. Two of my paintings had two poems and a structured musical improvisation written to them. So many different perspectives on the story behind my art nearly brought me to tears.

I was especially taken back by the story encapsulated in a beautiful poem by Will Becker, where he envisioned the thoughts and memories of a young cellist who was busking as she played her instrument in a walkway tunnel.

Follow that with learning what Natalie Spehar, the cellist from ROGUE COLLECTIVE (our featured musicians), had to say about this painting. She related to the image in a personal way, explaining how when practicing a piece she thinks about the parts played by other musicians. She could imagine the woman in the painting doing the same. The ROGUE COLLECTIVE performance started with Natalie performing a solo, the two violinists (Alexa Cantalupo and Kaitlin Moreno) acted as people in a crowd listening quietly and periodically dropping coins in a can. They then began to play their violins, simulating the thoughts of the cellist imagining the other parts of the orchestra.  What a powerful piece of music. The audience at our event was mesmerized by ROGUE COLLECTIVE; no whispering, not a sound as they were fully engaged.

In Her Own World by April M Rimpo
The atmosphere the cellist created in the tunnel in Central Park was amazing and made me wonder about her story and what she was thinking. As a result this painting, In Her Own World, was born. Now through the poems and the insights of musicians some of my wondering has been filled. When I paint images like this I can only imagine the story and often I can only wonder at the possibilities.

I'll be creating short videos for those poets and musicians who gave us permission to share their wonderful new creations. My goal is to have these done over the next couple weeks and I'll share them as they are completed.

An Unexpected Workshop for a Local Watercolor Group

Azalea Garden 11"X 14" watercolor by April M Rimpo
A local watercolor club reached out to me about 1.5 weeks ago to see if I would be available to teach a workshop to them an upcoming Saturday. I had done one other one-day workshop for them before and I knew the talent in the group was good. Their normal instructor had a conflict, so I was happy to help out.

I know their normal instructor as I took a workshop from him many years ago and wanted to teach something they might not learn from him. Based on some questions that had come up during a class for a different group, I decided a spring scene with flowers and people that also included reflections in the water. I had a new method for teaching how to paint trees and figured trees were another good thing to include in the painting.

Lakeside Azaleas by April M Rimpo
There is a local Azalea Garden, just a few miles from my home that typically shows off all the beautiful variety of colors of Azaleas this time of year. It's a favorite place to visit in May and leading up to Mother's Day.  I had not made it there this year, but that garden was my inspiration. I arrived with no reference material so they would also have to make up their own colors for the flowers and focus on learning techniques rather than copying a photograph.  I did locate a few images of the garden on my phone (thank you Google) to show them the overall concept, then turned it off and we started.

I love to demonstrate a step, then have the students paint, then demo the next step, etc.  This way it provides time for the painting to dry between steps, which is quite important on watercolors.  I actually worked the two demo paintings, shown above, concurrently, so I could show one step on one and the next step on the other, giving each demo a little bit more time to dry before I went back into the painting.

Since the group had also asked me to discuss the technique I use for varnishing watercolor paintings, we didn't have time to photograph the group with their paintings. I also knew from my last time with them that they really preferred not to have them photographed.  I was happy with what they produced and a few came up at the end of class to tell me they were happy with their results. One had seemed quite concerned during the class whether she was "doing it right" so I was glad to hear she was happy.

"Leading the Way" 34" X 24" watercolor

Leading the Way

Watercolor
Finished with Archival UV Protection Varnish
Framed with no Glass

34" X 24"

On exhibit at Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House May 9 - June 8, 2019

Leading the Way features Cyril Neville of the famed Neville Brothers. I was lucky enough to see him as a Special Guest at Voodoo Threauxdown during a set with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.  This close up of Cyril shows how this experienced virtuoso naturally took over the stage and effortlessly lead the other musicians through the songs. As he sang he pointed at other musicians to indicate it was their turn for a solo. What a joy to watch this master at work!

The energy he brought to the stage had the crowd up on their feet singing and dancing with the performance.

"Heating Up" 24"X24" Fluid Acrylic

Heating Up by April M Rimpo
Heating Up
Fluid Acrylic, Gallery Wrapped and Varnished
24" X 24"

On exhibit at Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House May 9 - June 8, 2019
Available on my website for purchase

Can you hear the saxophones? Base Sax, Alto Sax, and Guitar from Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue brought the audience to their feet numerous time during their performance in 2018 during Voodoo Threauxdown at Baltimore's Pier Six Pavillion. The colors in Heating Up are vibrating with energy, just like the musicians. They may be frozen in time in my painting, but they were moving all over the stage and rocking side-to-side. I love how paintings can bring back memories; I feel like I can hear them now. I hope this reminds you of some time when you saw a great show that just keeps coming back to visit through your memories.
