One of my favorite quotes about art is by Ivan Lissner, who said, "The secret of great art - to rob the moment of its impermanence." That was my goal with Preserving a Time. Sometimes Mother Nature puts on such a vibrant show that I must capture it. That was the case when the sky started to turn behind the beautiful clock tower. A gorgeous setting made better by the way the light enhanced the clouds with beautiful lavender and coral shades that picked up the color of the roof and shadows thrown by the trees. I amplified the sky and created a taller tree to cast a larger shadow on the building. I will remember this forever and hope my painting brings back wonderful memories for you of similar places painted by nature.

Parades and New Orleans come hand-in-hand. We all know the crowds that come to watch these parades, but for me the painting is all about the musicians and local dignitaries who participate. I love the clothing and colors showcased in these parades: purple and orange always being prevalent. Wanting to represent the music and energy of these events without including the crowds led me to consider how to “show” the music and help you “hear” it in my painting, resulting in the burst of color and “confetti” shown. Although not a conscious decision to leave out people because of the pandemic I can’t help but wonder if that may have been in the back of my mind as a quiet undertone.

Knowing there were 466 images submitted for this exhibition, I am honored that Parade Play was selected by juror Anne Abgott for the Baltimore Watercolor Society's 2021 Mid-Atlantic Exhibition to be presented from June 12 - August 31.

Beach Vacation brings back memories of many years of trips to the beach. My first beach trips were to the beautiful white sands on the Atlantic City Beach, way before the casinos moved there. The beaches in New England, where I grew up, had tan sand, while those in Oregon were slightly more rock and I found myself mesmerized by the Pacific Ocean, not paying much attention of the color of the sand.

Being the designer of this painting, I decided to give a rose colored cast to the sand, just for the fun of it, although I do believe I’ve seen coral colored beaches somewhere over the years.

I hope my painting takes you to a beach you enjoyed in your lifetime.

This painting was selected for the Georgia Watercolor Society National Show 2021 by John Salminen.

This sweet little fawn was born in the tall grass in our yard. Who knew that negligence, due to a lot of rain, would result in a perfect hiding place for the doe to deliver her fawn.  We were fortunate to have a view looking down into this spot from our living room.  My husband and I both took pictures as we watched our new neighbor.  

I believe this was its first time standing as it looked about on the world. Not long later the mother arrived to check on her fawn, who walked over to nurse. They sure get moving quickly. We were so honored to witness these early hours of the baby fawn's life.

The views along train tracks show a variety of subjects including cityscapes, rivers, mountains, and expansive fields. This painting looks at the workings of the railroad: the train light signals that keep trains on schedule avoiding collisions and the switches that move trains between tracks. The workers you see along the rails keep everything maintained. These are essential workers that keep this part of our infrastructure in order.

Switching Point is a watercolor on watercolor paper that was textured with a gesso and acrylic medium mixture. Working on a textured surface adds a lot of interest to the background. I textured this by using stamps to apply the gesso and acrylic mixture. The pattern was over most of the surface, shining through to different degrees depending on whether I subdued the pattern as I was painting.

The inspiration to paint this scene more than two decades ago occurred during a visit to Interlaken, Switzerland.  This view was across the road from the hotel where we stayed. Staying in the second-story room was lucky, providing this view.

A Glint of the Sun shows a chicken coop on my neighbor's property. The chickens tend to stay in the back of the property so I seldom see them, except when they wander out onto our shared private road. I’ve been wanting to paint this barn since we moved here 23 years ago. I’ve taken dozens of photos but none showed the barn well. In March I went out for a morning walk, not my normal time, and there the barn stood in its glory with the sun shining on the roof. I finally got some long awaited photos of the barn. It was worth the wait. I hope you enjoy the painting as much as I rejoiced being able to finally share this view with others.

I chose a spring green, purple, and red/orange color scheme for this painting. I find this color scheme dramatic and cheerful at the same time. I find it very appealing and hope you too will find this to be a joyful and cheerful spot that you love to periodically visit.

I’m grateful for the food industry: from the farmers, the food processors, those who deliver our food to market, and restaurants that prepare food for our consumption. It would be a very different life for most of us if these didn’t exist.  This is my nod to those who toil and persevere to keep us fed.

The stacks of flour needed to constantly supply the kitchen drew me to this scene. Their subtle color shift from one bag to the next was gorgeous to my eye so my camera came out to capture the lovely variation. The wonder pastel shades somehow enforced the beauty of what these people do for all of us.

Pelicans show off their flexibility and balance when preening their feathers after a morning swim.  I took countless photos that day waiting to capture one where they were all standing upright, then it dawned on me that their crazy poses were the real story of this painting. The subtle variation in color in their feathers went unnoticed until I started to paint them. Take some time to really enjoy the soft pastel shades of their plumage.

Normally I paint on watercolor paper, but not so for Guatemalan Girl.  Ampersand™ has a product called Aquabord™ that has a deep cradle made from 2" birch plywood strips that are attached flush with the back edge of the pane.  They make a nice presentation, so framing is not required.  The medium on the board is designed for use with aqueous media.  I found it had some of the same properties as watercolor paper, but I did have to be careful about how long I worked on an area to keep it from getting too soft.  When the painting was complete I varnished the surface so it can hang without glass.

I wanted to fragment the image so I chose 5" square aquabord and designed the piece so each segment would be an interesting painting in its own right.  The exact placement of her body in each frame was carefully crafted to create interesting abstract in each panel.

I considered an exhibit where each segment could be purchased separately.  If sold separately the girl would be shared among the various buyers.  It would be interesting to bring the buyers together to meet and foster new relationships through my art.

The more I thought about the logistics I feared it would be very difficult to hang the segments so they remain properly aligned when hung as a whole.  It seemed like aligning the segments might be a nightmare for me and the gallery, so in the end I attached the 9 panels to a sheet of Plexiglas™ and drill a slotted hole in the Plexiglas where it could be hung from a nail. 

I still like the idea of displaying art so separate pieces form one image while the individual works are sold separately.  Perhaps if I do this as a single line of paintings instead of a square of nine paintings the logistics of hanging would be reduced.  Let me know what you think about this idea.

Water Sprite is a tribute to a friend who loves fish. I know this because she bought a painting I did of fish and explained how much she enjoys them. She clarified that she did not mean she liked eating them. When she told me this, my thoughts immediately turned to doing a painting of her swimming with fish with a smile from ear-to-ear.  

Shortly before this conversation I had started a series of paintings with a goal accentual the inner story of a person. The story may be something few people or know or well known. Sometimes these inner stories are my reaction to the person, in other words, how I feel about them. So does that make it my inner story about the person?  Maybe not, but my point is that these are not traditional portrait but something deeper.  I hope you enjoy this painting and the others in this series.

Looking Back is inspired by the Arizona Living Pioneer Museum in Pioneer, AZ. The museum has changed drastically since I took this photo. We were there in the 1980s when I remember only a single museum building with no one dressed in historic clothing.  I'm not sure if all of this equipment is still scattered behind what was the main museum building. Nothing like capturing the history of a history museum. You know I love capturing light in my photos. We must have been there mid-day and the intense Arizona sun poured down on this old equipment creating a great contrast between the tops of things, such as the seats and wheels, with dark shadow essentially everywhere else.  Of course, rust also turns quite dark over time, looking nearly black, but you can still see here and there the burnt orange color of rust.

I was particularly enthralled with the small distant building and had to include that since it was so vivid in my memory. We never knew the story behind that building.

I love the effects of nature and time on things around us. They take items made by man and turn them into beautiful glistening objects. Perhaps no longer functional for their original purpose, but they tell a story of their time in the world. I captured this moment in the journey of the bucket and can of nails, but no doubt not the end of their life; nature isn't finished with them.

My Experience with Watercolor Canvas Panels

Every time I decide to try a new material, whether a new paint or a new platform to paint on, there is a time of adjustment when you are searching for techniques that work for the new materials. For the last week and a half I've been painting with watercolor paint on a Fredrix®  Watercolor Canvas Panel™.  I've used watercolor canvas (not mounted on a panel) before and liked it when painting with fluid acrylic.  I found I could work pretty much in the same manner as when painting on watercolor paper.  Unlike painting on traditional canvas, watercolor canvas is smoother and doesn't require you to apply an initial coat of paint to fill in the texture of the canvas.

I expected the watercolor canvas board to demonstrate the same smoothness but found it had a little bit more tooth or texture.  It was also more slippery, so when using dilute watercolor (i.e., pigment with a lot of water mixed in) it tended to remove the earlier layers of paint no matter how soft the brush and how lightly I pressed on the surface. I had to switch to using thicker applications of watercolor paint with very little water added to the paint. I could layer the thicker paint, using a light touch, and blend the new paint in with the earlier layers. Glazing thin washes didn't work.

As a watercolor artist that is used to applying thin glazes and gradually shifting to paints that have less water, I found it a bit uncomfortable using paint at a buttery consistency for most of the painting.  It felt much more like painting with oil paints, which I haven't done in 20+ years. I had to remember how to blend oil paints and use techniques much more like that. I reviewed information on https://fredrixartistcanvas.com and found out there is a lot of sizing on the canvas and if you wet and rub the canvas before starting to paint the "slipperiness" of the canvas is much reduced.  Of course it was too late to do that. Another tip was to apply and blend paint with the edge of the brush rather than the tip of the brush. I considered pulling out my fan brush for blending, but never did. 

"Scumbling" lighter color paint over darker passages, allowing the darker color to peek through the lighter passage became important for adding highlights; not something you do with watercolor since it is so transparent that you have to preserve light areas and not apply them at the end. 

The completed work is not transparent watercolor, so to make this painting come to life my focus was on color, light, and dark.

Not far from Buckingham Palace in London, we saw these two on horseback. I assume they were part of the palace guards. It was after the celebration of the Queen's birthday, so it could have been some of those riding in the parade. This was the calm after the parade that contained lots of regalia. It must be the humidity in the air that made all the flowers and trees feel fresh and soft. It was a lovely place.
