As part of my upcoming exhibit in May 2019 with Elaine Weiner-Reed we invited musicians, poets, and storytellers to join us in a collaboration of creatives. In preparation we reached out to various writing groups to solicit people to join us. Their written word will be displayed with the painting that inspired it.
Last night I attending Wilde Readings at the Columbia Art Center to meet writers, hear their readings, and hope that just a few may join us with a piece of their own and read it at our event on May 21 (6-8pm) at Bernice Kish Gallery in Slayton House in Columbia, Maryland.
At the event I learned that poetry about or inspired by a work of art is called Ekphrastic Poetry. This was actually mentioned by one of their guest writers, Lisa Vihos, before she knew I was there to speak about just that. Ms Vihos mentioned that everyone has a poet inside them. Earlier that day I had commented that I wouldn't be including any poetry in our event since I didn't think it was in me. As a result of Lisa's comment I tried my hand and the following are my thoughts on my painting. Likely not the best poem, but what was in me. Thanks for the inspiration, Lisa Vihos, for telling me to try.
Fluid
The grace of these dancers is enthralling
Their fluid movements remind me of birds soaring on high
Some pass their skills to young birds ready to stretch their wings
just beginning to learn how to fly
Like mother birds who nurture their young
to help them reach their dreams

I found an article about writing ekphrastic poetry online. It recommends that a group of poets write together. If you are in a poetry group that would like to do just that, feel free and we'll figure out how to present a variety of writings on the same painting. This is so lovely, April! I'm glad to know that my words prompted you to try your hand at poetry. Words and images make such good partners and words will always come if we just get out of our own way a little. I wish I was in Maryland and could participate in the upcoming collaborative event.
