Visiting a farm to purchase some fresh food can also be inspiring as an artist.  I was there during apple picking time and the trees were loaded with fruit. This tree leaned heavily under the weight of the fruit but was strong and looked like it had withstood years of producing food.  The hard work done by farmers to continually work for the betterment of all.  Like this tree they have taken on a heavy load of their own. This painting acknowledges their pledge to us and to the earth. We have a lot to be thankful for.

Here you can see April painting two parts of this painting

"Busy Night Out", a 32 X 16" Watercolor

Busy Night Out  © April M Rimpo
Busy Night Out

Watercolor, Varnished
32" X 16"
Mounted, Varnished and Framed in a 35" X 19" Brushed Silver Frame

SOLD through HorseSpirit Arts Gallery's

In Busy Night Out a place is shown where people are arriving for a night out. My goal is for you to define the stories about where these families and solo explorers are going and what they might do.  I'd love to hear your stories.

Varnished watercolor paintings are protected from the elements, so no glazing is used with this painting.  I think you'll find varnished paintings are more approachable and enticing.

Here are additional nighttime paintings by April:
You can see the student paintings from one of my Nighttime painting workshops here.

11 days into a 30 day challenge

I found out about this challenge after the first 2 days were compete, so I've got 9 images for the first 11 days. Unlike painting a day challenges where you are supposed to finish a painting per day, in this the goal is simply to do something artistic each day.  No requirement to complete anything.  However, I've used this as an opportunity to complete a variety of small works with only two requiring two days. One had been started before the challenge, but wasn't very far along. I hope you enjoy the variety. I certainly have enjoyed bouncing around on subject matter.

September 2019 - First 9 days of 28 day Creativity Challenge
  • Day 1 (for me) - Day's Journey - Watercolor - 14" X 11"
  • Day 2 -  Beginning of Village by the Sea, started as a demo piece in a Fluid Acrylic workshop - 21" X 15"
  • Day 3 - Village by the Sea, completed - Fluid Acrylic - 21" X 15"
  • Day 4 - Beginning of Family Ties - Watercolor - 7" X 5"
  • Day 5 - Mounted 3 watercolor paintings in preparation for varnishing
  • Day 6 - Sketch of Willow trees and swans - concept drawing for painting
  • Day 7 - Finished Family Ties - Watercolor - 7" X 5"
  • Day 8 - Flowers of Fall - Watercolor - 24" X 6"
  • Day 9 - Heading North - Watercolor - 4" X 4" X 2" block

I think my next painting will be a more typical larger painting that I might submit to an exhibition, if it comes out well enough.  We'll see what happens.

An Unexpected Workshop for a Local Watercolor Group

Azalea Garden 11"X 14" watercolor by April M Rimpo
A local watercolor club reached out to me about 1.5 weeks ago to see if I would be available to teach a workshop to them an upcoming Saturday. I had done one other one-day workshop for them before and I knew the talent in the group was good. Their normal instructor had a conflict, so I was happy to help out.

I know their normal instructor as I took a workshop from him many years ago and wanted to teach something they might not learn from him. Based on some questions that had come up during a class for a different group, I decided a spring scene with flowers and people that also included reflections in the water. I had a new method for teaching how to paint trees and figured trees were another good thing to include in the painting.

Lakeside Azaleas by April M Rimpo
There is a local Azalea Garden, just a few miles from my home that typically shows off all the beautiful variety of colors of Azaleas this time of year. It's a favorite place to visit in May and leading up to Mother's Day.  I had not made it there this year, but that garden was my inspiration. I arrived with no reference material so they would also have to make up their own colors for the flowers and focus on learning techniques rather than copying a photograph.  I did locate a few images of the garden on my phone (thank you Google) to show them the overall concept, then turned it off and we started.

I love to demonstrate a step, then have the students paint, then demo the next step, etc.  This way it provides time for the painting to dry between steps, which is quite important on watercolors.  I actually worked the two demo paintings, shown above, concurrently, so I could show one step on one and the next step on the other, giving each demo a little bit more time to dry before I went back into the painting.

Since the group had also asked me to discuss the technique I use for varnishing watercolor paintings, we didn't have time to photograph the group with their paintings. I also knew from my last time with them that they really preferred not to have them photographed.  I was happy with what they produced and a few came up at the end of class to tell me they were happy with their results. One had seemed quite concerned during the class whether she was "doing it right" so I was glad to hear she was happy.

City 10" X 10" mixed media

City by April M Rimpo
These paintings are titled "Country" and "City". My inspiration for the "City" painting came during a Touchstone Gallery reception.  I stepped outside during the reception and took some photographs of DC at night. Since I was planning a tree scene for "Country" I thought my image of one of the trees in front of the gallery lit by a street light would be a nice companion.  There were bicycles parked by the tree and those, of course, had to be included. In fact they were the reason I had taken the photograph.  This led to my decision to add a bicycle to the "Country" painting.

Country by April M Rimpo - SOLD

Both of these paintings were started on canvas and on rice paper. The rice paper was used to create textures in the foliage. It was attached to the canvas and then I add more paint to the rice paper surface allowing the underpainting on the canvas shine through.

"Grosvenor Arch" 12"X12" fluid acrylic and watercolor

Grosvenor Arch by April M Rimpo
Grosvenor Arch
Watercolor and Fluid Acrylic
12 X 12 X 0.75" deep, wood cradle

There are numerous places in the United States southwest where you can see beautiful, red-rock arches, pinnacles, spires, and cliffs. I always find them inspiring and Grosvenor Arch in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah was no disappointment. This painting started as 22" X 14", depicting the full height of the arch, but after some time I decided it is the arch itself that fascinates me, so I decided to rework it in a square 12" X 12" format.  The the focused look brings back memories of a great trip.
