Loss
Watercolor
20" X 16"
The story of a couple on their last vacation
together because one is beginning to fade and they believe travel will become
too difficult as time goes on. This quiet moment during the trip felt like a
good way to tell their story. Their strong sense of togetherness was palpable,
but the beginning of loss was also present.
Given the subject of the painting it took me years to decide how to portray the emotion from this scene. Although they were relaxed and enjoying the ride across the lake, my emotions were more complex. The decision to portray the scene all in blue with just touches of flesh tone on the woman was inspired by a variety of sources but ultimately my response to their situation. Her color is fading with the loss she sees in her husband.
