I have paintings in the "Interpretive Realms" exhibition at Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York City, NY starting this week.  It is always exciting to be included in an exhibit, but there is something very special about an exhibit in New York City.  I've included here images of my art that will be on display and links to earlier blogs on these paintings.  

Agora Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery established in 1984, dedicated to the promotion of national and international artists, providing original fine art to established and emerging collectors and catering to special events in support of fine art organizations that foster social awareness and promote environmental issues.  The gallery is also the publisher of ARTisSpectrum Magazine and the sponsor of ARTmine.com. American artist April Rimpo paints luminescent compositions in watercolors and fluid acrylics whose glowing hues and evocative textures are in sharp contrast to the softer tones typical of most watercolor paintings. Her transporting imagery renders scenes both familiar and distant — from American cityscapes to picturesque vistas in Europe or Latin America — in vivid, bright colors. Though her work is firmly rooted in realism, she also allows her paints to flow, meet, and meld, injecting elements of chance into her carefully and dynamically composed paintings.

“I watch it flow and respond, allowing the piece to develop in directions not fully planned,” Rimpo says of her method. “This is part of the thrill of working in watercolor that I didn’t find in other media.” She intrigues viewers by juxtaposing areas of near-abstract color with precisely outlined and filled in elements. This incredible variety of modes of application and imagery leaves her audience to complete the details of areas which have been washed over in seductive and dramatic hues, drawing them into the work.

Exhibit In New York City

 

The reception at Agora Gallery was an exciting time that left me exhausted.  Having finally recovered I wanted to share the reception with you.  There were three exhibits having their receptions at Agora Gallery that night: Sensorial Perspectives, Pathways to Abstraction, and The French Perspective. Before the crowds arrived, Agora Gallery's videograper, Crumlicmedia, worked with each artist to film us and our art.  These individuals clips were compiled with filming done throughout the reception to create a video that you can see along with stills taken by the still photographer.  Photos and a video of the reception  I have borrowed a couple of the stills in this blog posting, but most of the photos were taken by my husband, Chas Rimpo.

As you will see in these photos Agora Gallery is a large, beautiful space.  Each artist's space included a bio with their work along with a Quick Response Code (QRC) that can be scanned by mobile devices to take you directly to the artist's sales site.  I had six watermedia paintings on display, some were only watercolor and others were a combination of watercolor and fluid acrylic.  Five of the pieces can be seen in the picture with the videographer.  The sixth, At One with their Gondolas, is in the first photo (above). 

I spoke with several people during the reception, including Agora Gallery staff, clients, family, friends, and other artists. Below are photographs of some of the people I met during the event.  I really enjoyed the work by Liesel Beukes, (take a look at her website) .  Her paintings are visually intriguing and thought provoking.   I also met Kevin Stevens who does abstract paintings; I loved the inclusions that represent moments from his life.  He tells me he continues to explore a variety of media to learn and grow as an artist.

 

 

My friend, Joyce, attended the reception with her daughter.  It was great to visit.  One of our nieces was in New York on her way to Europe, so we were able to visit with her as well.  We were so busy talking we forgot to take her picture.

I was fascinated by the mixed media work by Katherine Li .  Unfortunately we were unable to meet her to ask about her process for creating this wonderful mixed media art. It had great depth and texture.

 Note: Chas and I took an Amtrak train to/from New York during which I took lots of photographs.  We also took many photos while in New York.  There are definitely some future paintings interspersed in all of this great material.  Stay tuned.

June 19, 2012 - Delivery Day

Today was the day to deliver my art to Agora Gallery in NYC.  Chas and I packed up the car last night.  Definitely would have been a problem if there had been more than 6 paintings.  I continue to paint large, despite advice from friends.  We'd tested the empty boxes a week ago to make sure they would fit in the Highlander and as you can see the boxes filled the back.  After getting the paintings packed in the car last night we had fun with bungie cords trying to figure out how to secure them in case of a quick stop.  No visibility out the back window on this trip.  We'll be adjusting those side mirrors!  (FYI - Nothing moved during the trip, so I guess we did okay.)

Fortunately, Agora was prepared for deliveries all this week, so they had cones in front of the gallery that we moved to park.  Yeah!  No double parking in NYC.  


We unloaded the car as fast as we could then Chas drove the car down to the parking garage just down W 25th Street, within eyeshot of Agora.


We took the paintings up the elevator to the 2nd floor and dropped them off.  Lots of driving for about 10 minutes of delivery time.  






We did take some time viewing the current exhibit at Agora before heading off to Joe's The Art of Coffee on W 23rd Street.  We'd been there on a previous visit to New York and we knew it would satisfy our finicky coffee habit.  Chas is still spoiling me with high quality home roasted coffee beans, but Joe's coffee was almost as good as what we have at home.

From Joe's we went to New York Burger Company for burgers and a rich chocolate milk shakes.  What decadence for 2 people who have been dieting for longer than we'd like to admit.


On our next trip we'll need to check out the High Line Elevated Park that runs parallel to 10th Avenue, right near Agora Gallery.  There is also Chelsea Garden, which is a couple blocks over by West 28th Avenue.  I suspect the hotel where we'll be staying for the reception on July 12th is right next to Chelsea Park.

Including our time in NYC our round trip took 9.5 hours.
