Lakeside and Standing Tall VI 9X12 plein air paintings

Lakeside by April M Rimpo

What a perfect paint out as part of the Columbia, Maryland 50th Anniversary celebrations.  The weather could not have been better.  Temperatures ranged from 60 - 70 during the day with a lovely breeze.  The views were incredible around Wilde Lake.  Painters had the option to paint at either Wilde Lake or Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia, Maryland.  The turn out by local artists was great. So many people came by while we were painting.  Such lucky residents to live near all of theses wonderful scenes.

Contemporary Landscapes Solo Exhibit

Opening Reception of April's solo exhibit, Contemporary Landscapes
Having an solo art exhibit is always a great experience, but when the exhibit is held at such a beautiful venue as the Columbia Art Center in the Long Reach Village Center in Columbia, Maryland the exhibit is elevated to another level. Everyone who attended the reception who had never been to the Art Center before commented on this beautiful venue.

When the venue is this wonderful it allows the artwork to really sing. The comments and questions I received about my art told me my goal to transport people into the scenes and make them feel like they were there was working. Many of the paintings are gallery wrapped*, where the painting continues around the edge and it is presented without a frame. To quote a friend of mine, this approach "makes the paintings feel more like a part of the room than a part of the wall." I think this allows you to experience the art more intimately, which is why I love this presentation style.

Traffic Jam was sold during the Opening Reception
Three days after the Opening Reception, the Art Center held an event with Stephen Acker, former Senior Music Program Advisor for the National Gallery of Art, who spoke about the art of Modigliani and the music of Ravel. This program was a partnership between the Columbia Art Center and the Candlelight Concert Society, who are sponsoring a concert with the Modigliani Quartet on November 20th at the Smith Theatre, Horowitz Center. The quartet will be performing pieces by Mozart, Brahms, and Ravel. If you want to learn more about this concert or buy tickets go to the Candlelight Concert Society's website.

A second reception was held after the Revealing Ravel and Modigliani program, where the audience was able to not only interact with Stephen Acker, but also talk to me about my artwork. Many thanks to the Columbia Art Center for this great opportunity to hear this program and to meet these music and art lovers.

Here are a couple more images taken after installation so you can see a little more of the artwork. To see the whole exhibit, visit the Columbia Art Center. Contemporary Landscapes is on display through December 4th. Hours, address and directions can be found here.

*Gallery wrapped paper
Since I work on watercolor paper and wrap it around stretcher bars, the artists in the crowd were full of questions about my process as well.  Once gallery wrapped I varnished the pieces to protect the paper from the elements.

Each spring Howard County Maryland, where I live, holds a number of events to support Blossoms of Hope. This cause supports the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital. This painting was done for an exhibit called Haiku for Hope and will be presented with an associated haiku written by a local poet. The child in the foreground links back to the haiku written by Poppy Herrin. Springtime won an Honorable Mention Award at this exhibit.

This painting was one of those selected for banners that were displayed as part of a special ceremony held on National Arbor Day at Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia, Maryland. The banners used for the ceremony have also been used at the Howard County Welcome Center in Ellicott City.

Howard County has planted over 1600 Kwanzan cherry trees throughout the county.  The Kwanzan cherry trees bloom about two weeks later than the Sakura trees that surround the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC allowing you to enjoy the beautiful blossoms for a longer period of time.  You can read more about the Blossoms of Hope events at http://www.visithowardcounty.com/blossoms-of-hope, where you can also find a map where the trees have been planted.

Given the opportunity for a banner I wanted a painting that celebrated the cherry blossoms and had a strong graphic line that would lend itself well to the banners.  I use this style in some of my paintings and I like the simplification of shapes with the line work.  Of course a strong value pattern (darks and lights) is essential for a banner format which is perfect for the way I like to work in watercolor.

"Local Color" Exhibit at Artists' Gallery of Columbia

  • My painting, Making Tortillas, was selected for the exhibit "Local Color" to be held at

Artists' Gallery of Columbia

August 3 - 28.

I'm happy  that this is my second year in this exhibit, where Artists' Gallery of Columbia opens their doors to non-members.

Come join artists, friends, and collectors at the reception on
Friday, August 7th from 6 - 8 PM.
Award recipients will be announced and reception refreshments will be available.

I visited the gallery yesterday to see the work included in the exhibit and to take a few preview pictures before the reception. I hope these wet your appetite and that you take the time to checkout the full exhibit.

I'll definitely be at the reception so I can take a closer look at the great artwork.

Congratulations to the 29 artists whose work was selected and many thanks to the selection committee and hanging committee for creating such a beautiful show.
